Are you dissatisfied with your job? Are you looking for a career that gets you out of stuffy offices? Or perhaps you’re close to graduating high school, and weighing your options going forward?

In either case, this is a great time to look into attending a trucking driver school in Ontario.  There’s a real shortage of truck drivers, so demand is high.  Anyone who’s qualified can quickly get all the work they want while gaining a set of skills that could potentially keep you employed for decades to come.

Better yet, it’s not that hard to become a truck driver.  You could potentially have all the training and the license you need in less than a year!

How To Become A Truck Driver In Ontario

Broadly speaking, you need two things to become a licensed truck driver in Ontario: training from a certified trucking driver school, and your own licenses. You don’t even need a high school degree, although having a degree or GED will help you find jobs.

To get started, you need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old, with a minimum of grade 10 english
  • Have a valid non-learners driver’s license for four-wheeled vehicles
  • Be able to pass a vision test (with corrective lenses, if needed)
  • Drivers abstract from Service Ontario
  • Submit a medical report, since some medical conditions can potentially disqualify applicants if the condition would be a danger on the road.

If you’ve got that covered, the next step is to apply to a trucking driver school in Ontario, which will teach you everything you need to know about operating heavy trucks, trailers and machinery.  Depending on the school, you might even be able to also pick up some certifications in heavy construction equipment, which would give you more job options.

The goal is to qualify for a Class AZ truck license. A Class A license can drive large vehicles of any weight, while the Z certification means you’re trained on using air brakes.  Once you’ve completed the courses, which can potentially be done in just a few weeks, all you have to do is pass written and road tests administered by the Ministry of Transportation, and you’re ready to go.
